Prisoner Escort Vehicles
The production of vehicles for the transportation of persons in custody is a recent example of how Gray & Adams has added a new product to their portfolio, and in typical Gray & Adams style, has quickly dominated the market.
Gray & Adams has developed a unique expertise in the design and manufacture of these highly specialist vehicles. The custodial vehicle range varies in size from conversions of 3.5 tonne vans for 2-cell applications to 14-cell vehicles based on 12 tonne chassis.
Custodial vehicles are designed with priority given to the safety and security of prisoners and custodians. They include features that prevent or reduce the risk of prisoners escaping and minimise the risk of injury or self-harm. Systems to minimise tampering with equipment and to reduce deliberate damage to the interior by prisoners are also put in place.
All vehicles in the range incorporate heating, lighting, ventilation and air conditioning that can be regulated from inside the body by the custodian. All Gray & Adams prisoner escort vehicles have passed temperature-control tests, which certify them as being safe for the transportation of personnel, regardless of the temperature or the amount of time spent in the vehicle. The testing procedure ensures that heating and air conditioning systems are capable of maintaining temperatures within the cells even in ambient temperatures up to 30oC.
The most recent addition to the custodial range is the development of the so-called 'Category A' vehicles, for transporting high security prisoners.
