Hella Wiring SystemTrailer Wiring: Gray & Adams have standardised all trailer wiring and lighting to the Hella EasyConn system.  The basic principle of this system is that it helps operators identify the various electrical connections between the articulated unit and the trailer for lighting, braking and ancillary equipment and therefore minimises the risk of the wrong connections being made.  Other manufacturers lights can be opted for but with a full Hella system Gray & Adams can offer a five year warranty.

EXTERIOR LIGHTS

Exterior marker lights are positioned on the side and rear of trailers and bodies.  Trailers have addtional marker lights at the front end.

  • Rear Marker Lights: Two rear marker lights are generally fitted as standard but additional lights can be opted for, up to a maximum of ten.  Rear marker lights are usually positioned on the top two corners and are protected by a stainless steel shroud.  High-Level Brake and Indicator Lights offer extra safety as they can be seen by vehicles travelling behind the trailer or body if it is in a dip in the road ahead.
  • Side Marker Lights: Five marker lights are fitted to each side of the body or trailer as standard but any number can be fitted from two to six lights on each side.  Side marker lights are positioned along the bottom of the exterior sidewall.  High-level side marker lights can also be recessed into the sidewall as another option.
  • Front Marker Lights: Four marker lights are fitted as standard to the front corners of trailers but other configurations of two, five or eight can be fitted on request.

INTERIOR LIGHTS

Interior lights are usually incorporated into the roof of bodies or trailers.  Four lights are fitted as standard in trailers and either two or four in rigid bodies, depending on the length.  Additional interior lighting can be opted for, all of which will be evenly spaced.  Interior lights can be incorporated into the sidewalls rather than the roof so that, if a two-temperature door is fitted, it does not block the light to other compartments in the body or trailer.

LIGHT PAN BRACKETS

Light pan brackets house and protect the brake and reverse lights.  They can take many forms to suit individual operations, but are usualy of stainless steel construction and can be single or double plates.  Lights can be surface-mounted or recessed.  When a retractable tail lift is fitted, a vertical light pan bracket is usually necessary.  Some operators believe that an 'infilled' stainless steel type bracket offers a more attractive appearance.

A selection of Gray & Adams light pan brackets are shown below:

TYPES OF LIGHTS

Trucks and trailers are regulated by a strict set of criteriafor lighting requirements.  Various different types are available, from standard bulbs to fluorescent and LED.  All types are suitable for tempatures as low as -40oC.  LED lights are brighter and do not fail like standard bulbs.  This has obvious cost saving and operational benefits, as vehicles will not have to be taken off the road as often for blown bulbs to be changed.  LED lamps typically use one fifth to one tenth of the power of incandescent lamps and, being solid-state devices, LED lighting is also insensitive to shock and vibration.
